$65.4 million overcharged from 80,000+ customers
From 2002 to 2024, NV Energy systematically overcharged multi-family housing residents by misclassifying them at single-family rates. The company initially offered only $17M in refunds covering six months — the legislature required full restitution with interest.
$63 million spent to kill energy choice
In 2018, Berkshire Hathaway funded the most expensive ballot measure campaign in Nevada history to defeat Question 3, which would have ended NV Energy's monopoly. 67% of voters rejected energy choice.
550+ solar jobs eliminated overnight
After NV Energy pushed through net metering changes in December 2015, SolarCity, Sunrun, and Vivint Solar shut down all Nevada operations. The state went from a solar leader to an industry cautionary tale.
First-in-the-nation residential demand charge
Starting April 2026, NV Energy can add $25+ to monthly bills based on peak usage windows. Nevada is the first state in the country to impose this untested pricing model on residential customers. The Attorney General says it violates state law.
$216 million rate hike requested — third year running
NV Energy requested $216 million in 2025, double the prior year's request. The PUC approved approximately $119 million. Each year the ask grows larger.
Greenlink West doubled to $4.2 billion — ratepayers pay
The Greenlink West transmission line was originally estimated at $2.5 billion. By 2024 it had ballooned to $4.2 billion. Southern Nevada ratepayers are covering 70% through a $4/month surcharge.
47% more energy needed for data centers
NV Energy now needs 47% more energy than it predicted just two years ago, driven by data center demand. This is projected to cause a 53% increase in greenhouse emissions — 3.2 million additional tons — and likely means Nevada will miss its 2030 clean energy mandate.
All profits leave Nevada
NV Energy is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Profits flow to Berkshire Hathaway's headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. Warren Buffett acquired NV Energy for $5.6 billion in 2013.
Demand charge delayed twice — still coming Jan 2027
NV Energy's first-in-nation residential demand charge was supposed to start April 2026. They delayed it to October, then the PUC pushed it to January 2027. NV Energy's excuse: they're too busy processing the $65M overcharge refunds to explain the new charge to customers.
Attorney General says demand charge violates state law
The AG's Bureau of Consumer Protection argues the demand charge illegally mandates time-of-use billing (optional under state law), shifts costs unfairly onto solar customers, and improperly approves $2.7 million in unverified utility affiliate expenses.
$40-60+ added to summer bills for families with AC + EV/pool
While NV Energy claims the average impact is $20/month, households running air conditioning alongside an EV charger, pool pump, or electric dryer could see $40 to $60+ on summer bills. Solar customers face ~$12/month increases from cloud-related demand spikes.
